A sneak peek of Ariana Grande and Cynthia Erivo’s characters in the upcoming live-action film adaptation of the Broadway musical Wicked has been revealed. Grande shared a photo of herself as Glinda, while Erivo gave a glimpse of herself portraying Elphaba on separate Instagram posts on April 16. The director of the 2024 film, Jon M. Chu, also posted the same snapshots on his Instagram page. In the images, Grande can be seen wearing Glinda’s iconic puffy pink dress as she ascends a staircase, while Erivo dons Elphaba’s classic green face and black outfit.
Grande had previously revealed in early April that the filming of Wicked was already halfway done. The long-awaited big-screen adaptation of the prequel to The Wizard of Oz will star Grande as Glinda opposite Erivo’s Elphaba, along with Jonathan Bailey as Fiyero, Michelle Yeoh as Madame Morrible, and Jeff Goldblum as The Wizard. Other cast members include Keala Settle, Bowen Yang, Marissa Bode and Ethan Slater.
Chu has also noted that Wicked will be divided into two films, with the first part set to arrive in November 2024 and the follow-up scheduled for the following year. In his Instagram post, Chu captioned the snapshots with a tease of the film’s storyline: “You weren’t told the whole story. What happens when you veer off the Yellow Brick Road? FIRST LOOK of the #WickedMovie… currently in production in Oz.” Fans are eagerly anticipating the release of the highly-anticipated film.
